Coretta Scott King, Why all the fuss?

What’s the deal about Coretta Scott King?

If I see one more tribute to the dead wife of slain black leader Martin Luther King I am going to scream.

So what? She died, what’s the big deal? All this flying flags at half-mast for what reason? She was no national hero, She did nothing great, and her big claim to fame is her husband was killed.

Where were all the tributes when Jackie Kennedy died? Where was her body laid in state?

This is just more politically correct garbage; if she were white there would not be such a display.

How have we let America fall into such a place that we “honor” someone not for what she did, but for the color of her skin?

Sure. Not a problem. We're always willing to listen to other opinions as long as those holding those opinions don't automatically assume that we're a) stupid or

ignorant just because we don't agree 1000% to those same opinions.

Unfortunately, there are too many people (from all sides of these debates) that make those assumptions just because someone doesn't agree with us.

Again, you took offense because you were ignorant of the reference. My Husband is a practicing Sadist, and I am a sexual masochist. He really DOES call it foreplay, lol, and as a matter of fact I bought him a kangaroo hide cat-o-9 tail whip for Christmas last year. I was laughing when you hysterically demanded that I "think about what it's like to be whipped." I don't HAVE to 'think about it,' it's a fairly regular occurence around here.

Ah, I think that was a little more than any of us had to know. You fell short of tellling us where you got it, how much you paid and what happened before you got to the wipping and after you got wipped. Please, I am curious by nature but I have limits.

I may have made some typos, in my grammar, but, I guess you feel the need to try and make it more than what it really is. Do you feel better now? What I am suppose to feel all bad and stupid? This site just goes to show that if no one agrees with you, they are labelled stupid and racist because they share a different opinion.

Get use to it , it's not like you don't do the same. And why do you blame a whole site for the actions of a few people? Do you even realize how many categories are there on this site and how many people who post articles and make replies that don't do it in the political section? As far as a few people on this site calling me a racist, that is amusing. LW is the only person on this site who has used the word "Ngger" freely.I haven't seen anyone else using it, regardless of the context.

I personally don't give a dam about this whole crap over the word "nigger" (there I said it, now she's not the only one). I will never understand why is it OK for black people to use the nigger, a word that means the same if said by a black, hispanic, asian, white or muslim person. Who the f_ck are black people to tell me what words I can and can not use? Or anyone else for that matter.

These are just a few replies within this article saying positive things about Mrs. King. Of course you only see what you wanna see and ignore the rest in order to make your point across, don't worry you are not the only one. Next time get a clue before you post.

As far as one of the bloggers stating about me being "Angry", that is another label. I am just sick and tired of everyone else being an authoritive on race relations.

If that is not you being angy, I don't know what is.

My whole intent was to try and get everyone to see things from a different perspective, and not in a racist one.

Yes I have, I am Puertorican born in the US and I know what it's like to be ignored, to be treated like lower class, to be considered stupid, to be envied because I need no greed card or passport to go and come from my families country. And if you don't think I would have an idea of what it's like to be beaten and wipped, maybe you should look up past history of Puerto Rico and it's citizens, how parents punished their children, how blacks were also slaves as well as native indians. I have spanish and black blood running in me so don't you dare question me about experiencing racial discrimination.

The whole point is, Would any of you be saying the same thing if Coretta Scott King was white? No, because Jackie kennedy was brought up as not having the same honour for her burial. There always has to be a comparison between the two. This is what the topic is about, not race, but you are completely ignoring the others who have made it a "racial topic". Some of you are so quick to judge others, but don't want to be judged, so what makes you right?

You made this a racial argument with your first post. But we should ignore that instead. BTW it was you who judged LW pretty fast even before she admitted she had been part of the KKK before. After finding that out only made you worse. It works both ways you know.

I have always been successful in most things, and I have never used the race card to get where I wanted to be in life. Other prominent blacks have worked hard to get where they are today, and yes maybe they did it with the help of others, but who hasn't, Black or white?

And so have many whites and latinos, whats your point?

Maybe I did come off in a strong and defensive manner, but my frustration stems from the racist steryo-typing that other bloggers have written, and have it swept under the rug. I never was trying to make this a racial topic, but if you go back and read some of the comments posted by others, it makes you think that this site is a place for releasing racist tensions. I do realize this is a public forum, and everyone is entiled to their own opinions, but when you don't agree with the few regulars on this site you become under personal attack.

It's called free speach you nit wit and people here are not being racist except you. You are the only one who seems to be blaming everyone else for things that happen to blacks, as if they are the only ones being discrminated over.

Then you try to appologize for what you said, kinda late don't you think? All you have done is complain about how we don't think she is a great woman when most of us think she is a great woman but don't understand why she is being treated a some kind of queen simply because she is black. This whole politically correct crap makes many of us sick but you don't see it because you yourself are black and always expect black people to be remembered not for what they did but because they werer black. That is why black history month exist, not becaue of the accomplishments done, but because they werer done by black people and that is wrong because white people have also done alot of good things like Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and there is no white history month for them. Same goes for hispanic people and Asian for that matter. Why are black people so much more special than everyone else. If you cared at all for real about black people why are Africans still suffering? That is what get's me mad about people like you. It's only about how bad you had it and only you matter even though many others have suffered similar situations.

I think that jews had it worse having an entire country out to kill them rather than having them as slaves, their lives were ar risk the day they were born but do you care? Hell no, they are white, how bad could it have been right? Funny when you look at it, it was white people who werer trying to kill them.

When I lived in Florida, we were bussed to a school 12 miles away. There were 2 high schools closer, but Tarpon Springs High School didn't have enough of us White American folks for comfort, so our neighborhood was selected to help "integrate" the school.

While trying to learn the city of Milwaukee for my new paramedic job, I decided (on my own time) to find all 13 hospitals and drive to each. A couple of the hospitals are in really bad parts of the city. While driving through one area, a woman in another car tried very hard to run me into a parked car. When I looked over at her, I saw in her eyes and felt in her entire counenance, nothing but pure hatred.

Running ambulance in Atlanta Georgia, we ran a lot of calls in some of the most violent "projects" in the country. Now, Grady EMS has the reputation of helping anyone, no questions asked. Because of that reputation, not only do the police help protect us on calls, but so do the local gangs.

As long as I was there, in uniform, with a Grady ambulance, I had hundreds of gangbangers watching my back. Now, what do you think would happen if I mistook that for acceptance and went into any of those areas of Atlanta in Blue Jeans and T-Shirt, driving my minivan?

Don't for a second make the mistake that racial discrimination or bigotry is only found among White people.

For real? Wow, that is shameful. I'm Rican and never had a problem with whites, blacks, asians, etc. I never considered myself lower than anyone and never will. As far as I'm concerned I am a human born in the US from Puertorican, Spanish and African background. I will make friends with any person no matter race, religion, handicap (if any), sex, skin color or planet for that matter. I will hang out with any guy, get along with gay people, have sex with any woman (of my chosing of course) and fight for the right of every human to be free.

There's not a racist bone in my body, I will only not get along or be close to those who do wrong things such as drugs, spousel abuse, child abuse, alcoholic, murderers, terrorist, and everything that falls within these categories.

I personally believe that no one deserves any better treatment than anyone else around the world, not any president, not a king or queen, not a manager, not a handicap, not a woman, man or child. We are all equal and deserve just as much respct, honor, love and recongition as anyone else. Except maybe those who fall in the categories of the above paragraph.

Then you got more aggresive and began alshing out even stronger, then you acted like the victim of attacks by a bunch of KKK-like people, the you tried to say I'm sorry while still trying to defend you point and accuse others of making you say what you said and now you want to make peace by not jumping to conclusions before time, having facts before posting and trying to earn respect by giving it first? Man talk about going thru so many emotions, attituds and characters all in a few days and a few post.

OK I too will give you the benefit of the doubt, but next time you want to strike hard to make a point, expect to be struck back. This here is a debate not a wodden board and like Bruce Lee once said "board don't fight back" but we do.

ya gotta understand this was a ghetto, the Italians had there part 112th street to 125th street between the river, pleasant ave 1st ave, second ave.

The blacks had a huge chunk to big to type here, the puerto ricans had "el barrio" and did not allow anyother races to pass freely.

On a side note my running partner was celestino mendez {jimmy to me} we got along fine as adults but as kids we tried to kill each other.

That's bunk, frankly. The civil rights movement was big machine, and King was one of the shinier cogs that people noticed. It's criminal that he has a national holiday in light of the thousands of people of all races that worked to make change, and also gave their lives. I hope that we can reverse the whole MLK day/Black History Month stuff eventually to be more equitable. The murdered white civil rights workers in Mississippi gave as much as MLK, as did many who devoted themselves to it and who are now forgotten.

So the worker bee does as much as the queen? Think about it for a second. King was very vibrant, a target for many who wanted to kill him continuosly (not for a few days or minutes out of their lives), and connected to many more people then others (of which why he became a very hi profile figure).

Are you dismissing that fact? True, maybe I got carried away with using specific words like 'because of him' much like people say 'all you have to do is work hard' as an oversimplification of what happend, but lets be clear that King and his wife gave up a whole lot more than many members of what I agree was a machine.

I think It is easy to get "caught' up in the whole race thing. I didn't share some of the real reasons why I was so adament about it.
I guessI can thank my mother for being so liberated, and teaching my family not to hate others because they were of another race.
My mother is black and Metis, my father is white. I have blue eyes, and distinct features. No matter where I go I have people questioning my ethinticity. After awhile, It gets tiring. I am no different from anyone else, but I was always made to feel otherwise.

I just feel strongly about some things, and I truly believe that it shouldn't matter what color someone is.
I was raised in believing that all people are to be treated equal. Maybe there is something to be said about finding a place and feeling comfortable in it.

I too , went through a tough battle of fitting in. Black people don't want to accept you because you are "Too White" and White people don"t want to accept you because you because they are trying to determine what color you really are.
I think what is really interesting is how the bloodline will skip different generations and you find out all sorts of family history.

Growing up in a house hold where you had mixed blood, race was never an issue in my family. We would watch TV and there would be all kinds of debates, or stories in the news about racial violence. My father, who is white never felt uncomfortable, and neither did my mother. The one thing I do remember is, how the kids at school would make an issue of it, or question why I had a white father, or a black mother. I was made to feel indifferent, but I use to think what side do I take?

My mother would step in and say," When somone asks you what race are you"? "you tell them ,you are from the human race".
So, you see I am not a racist, I just get upset when RACE is always put in where it shouldn't matter.
Society always decide for you. Why do I have to claim any side? I have a grand daughter who has the same blue eyes, and blonde hair, but she has prominent black features. Already at the age of three, there are parents at the daycare where she attends commenting on her racial background. She is a child, a beautiful one might I add. I am proud of her, and I love her dearly.

I raised my sons the same way I was brought up, and they are not raicist against anyone either.
My youngest son is 6ft 6", and he always gets the odd comment about being a basketball player,because of his height.
We don't think that is steryotypical,but you will always get the one person who will have racist comments.
My point is I am just going to live my life as I have always have, and not made to feel guilty for not becoming "politically' or 'Racially "
involved.This whole experience at JU has brought me back to earth with a crash, I just forgot what my momma taught me.
