America has problems, but America is NOT THE PROBLEM!~
Yours, not someone elses that you have.

Because of the nature of things in life we do not get to hold on to many things from childhood, I was wondering what do you have? How old is it?

Mine is a piece of wood about 20 inches by 40 inches with a map of the United States drawn on it, by me when I was a cub scout

Age of me when done, 9 years old, age of my possession 50 years.

Wow, sounds cool. One of my minor hobbies is collecting canes and walking sticks, which started back when I first starting having difficulty walking due to back problems. Do you know it's origin?

Well I picked it up through my mom's siste's husband. So this was a married-in relation not bloodline. The stick itself is of Scottish origin while I am distinctly polish-romanian. What uncle Rick (the last owner) said was that it was passed down from second son to second son. I couldn't tell you why. Problem is the son inheriting this has a drinking problem and pawned it for money. This bothered my uncle greatly and when I expressed an interest in it he felt I could keep it 'but it was forevermore on loan' as it was not mine as I broke the generational ritual of the stick.

The stick itself is around 4 1/2 ft in length with a very dark cheery finish to it. I'm still trying to find out what type of wood it is. It is 'beautifully ugly' as it is the most intrically carved piece of wood I have seen. The shapes are far more detailed than inuit art. The shapes seem almost to be angry or in pain! The horns of the ram are still sharp and not all that worn despite its age. When used for walking you palm the ramhead while index finger grips between the virgin bossoms. Sorta like a perverse knifle handle grip.

My guess is that this stick was so ugly that nobody actually 'walked' with it! One look at the stick and it is definitely of celtic origin. It was possibly made somewhere in the 12th-early 13th century and represents one of the last pictish designs before christianity came to scotland. Given my uncle's red wavy hair that isn't hard to believe.

My parents probably have some items from when I was a baby...or not...

At one time I had the Bible I received when I was born. It's a little miniature Bible and it's white.

I don't know where it is, though, so I suppose the oldest thing of mine is a drawing of a face that I did with markers when I was about three.

We've moved a lot in the past few years, so a lot of my keepsake type stuff is in storage back in Texas.

Erm, my wife, arggh...BIFF...stop it, honey...BASH...I didn't see you there...SPLATT...

In all seriousness, I still have my christening cup, which is about 40 years old now. I also have some sea-shells my Great-uncle willed to me when I was still a young teenager. He'd been collecting them since he was a young teenager, so some of them would be over 80 years old. The two big ones are sitting on the window sill in my bathroom.

Apart from photographs, one of them of me when I was six months old, I have a bible my dad gave to me when I was a pre-teen. It's battered and bruised because of my oldest girl, when she was a toddler she loved the pictures that were in it. It also has a lot of red, black and blue ink markings from my reading of it and from the looks of it I read it from cover to cover!

I have two items that are pretty old. and one childhood toy that's as old as i am.

1. An antique handcarved rocking chair that came over with my ancestors from Ireland (I think it's around 150 yrs old.)
2. A suit of armor (we named him Fred) that is stamped 1853.
3. A miniature Tonka firetruck.
