America has problems, but America is NOT THE PROBLEM!~
OK NOW WHAT?

I have been sidelined with the flu and since I have no immune system, anything I catch lays me low.

The question I want to ask is.

OK we close gitmo, now what?

Lets try to keep politics out of this and discuss what do we do with these killers and terrorist, where do they go, home? American prisons? where, at whos expense? who is in charge of them, how do we treat them?

I don't think anyone should be locked up with out at least being charged. The very fact that citizens of other countries have been incarterated without charge, a fair trial etc contravenes every idea I have about justice. To be fair, I think the GITMO prisoners should be evaluated by a international panel and if found guilty, sent back to their own countries for trial and punishment.

You know maso I've asked this question before and have not got an answer yet. Just what crime would you charge them with? Found guilty? Of what? Get it right old man. War does NOT go hand in hand with the criminal justice system.

I know, but the prison still exists. A few renovations, upgrade the security perimeter and reopen it. Still, it's probably a bad example anyway as it's probably little more than a run-down museum by now.

A few renovations? That wouldn't even begin to cover it's sorry state. Go here and view the picture. Ya gotta have quicktime installed to view.

Hmm, I think it is more realistic than

I say we gas them

for instance. This comment rankled me as it indicates an assumption of guilt without a trial, something I'm sure the American Administration would not tolerate if the shoe were on the other foot.

The issue isn't that simple modman. Not at all. First we have to see and understand that the men and children at Gitmo have for the most part been swept up by something way beyond their control. Don't misunderstand the situations that ended with them sitting in Cuba. The naive think there was a firefight with some 'insurgents' somewhere and the enemy prisoners of war from those battles were taken for interrogation. The reality is that the US paid warlords, greedy warlords, for each 'suspect' they brought in which of course resulted in huge nets of people whether militant or civilian. I shudder to think of the horrific torture that goes on there. AbuGraib would look like a fun resort in comparison solely because there is no chance of outside influences taking advantage of the reality that occurs there. The solution, or a solution, could be to open the doors to the public in some form. Of course that would never happen but if it did, the people would find out a CHR of what goes on in the torture chambers. It's kind of ironic. Sadaam's jails became US jails. Sadaam's torture rooms became the US's torture rooms. Sadaam's evil guards became the US's evil guards. Sadaam's abuse became the US's abuse. Don't think people there don't understand that reality. They're not stupid. They see the duplicity close up.

It does have possibilities.  being in San fran and all, the hotbed of liberalism.

But you are correct, it is a poorly maintained museum.
