America has problems, but America is NOT THE PROBLEM!~
Might as well show the world what it really is about

This is not about health, the welfare of the nation, it is about politics plain and simple, it is about the DEMOCRATS doing what they do best, Fight a battle with President Bush just for the sake of fighting a battle, from their own comments is is plain as the nose on my face {which is a big nose a great big JEWISH NOSE} that Pelosi and Clinton do not have a clue about what they are talking about, they have done no research into the subject at all, they are just keeping their names in the headlines so it APPEARS they care. Well if they cared they would throw their weight behind what has already been proven to work ADULT STEM CELL RESEARCH!!! But no, they want to kill something before they are happy, it goes with their abortion stance, it's not really human yet is how they make it so they can sleep at night, when they think of it this way in their conscience it's just a blob of cells that one day could become a human being but not yet. Well Nambla Nancy and Makeover Hillary I hope you can sleep well knowing you support the ways and means to kill human beings {abortion} and now want to expand your murderous ways to include embryos too.

On June 20th {My Birthday} President Bush vetoed S5, a bill that would have mandated Federal funding of the type of stem cell research that would require the KILLING of human embryos. At the same time he issued an executive order intended to PROMOTE more federal funding for PROMISING types of stem cell research that does not require the harming of human embryos.

At the time of his veto President Bush stated "destroying human life in the HOPES of saving another human life is just not ethical and it is not the only option before us" Continuing his remarks the President said "we're already seeing remarkable advances in the science and the therapeutic uses of stem cells drawn from adults and children and the blood from umbilical cords, with no harm to the donor".

On the day of his veto Senator Hillary Clinton {D- NY} predictably stated, "it's just one example of how the President puts ideology before science, politics before the needs of our families" Shortly before the threatened veto Speaker of the House Nancy {NAMBLANANCY} Pelosi {D-CA} had stated "science has taken us to a place that is biblical in its power to cure and that is embryonic Stem Cell research" Notice how the Democrats keep trying to weave the Bible into their speeches? So they can PRETEND to not BE THE SECULAR PROGRESSIVES THEY ARE, but just plain folk with deep religious convictions, I wonder if Nambla Nancy opened a bible if it would burst into flame from indignation at this heathen touching it?!!

However Legislative Director of the National Right to Life Committee observed that "Not a single human being has benefited from and procedure using embryonic stem cells, Pelosi's statement is just another demonstration that the Congressional Leadership in much more interested in demagoguery than in supporting the most promising types of stem cell research, which do not require the KILLING of human embryos".

In the East room where President Bush issued his executive order and the veto of S5, he called to attention some patients that have benefited from therapies which DID NOT use embryonic stem cells and also highlighted two recent promising alternative sources. Carol franz had Multiple Myeloma, a very nasty blood cancer. Highly aggressive. She was treated with her own bone marrow adult stem cells, about three years later when the disease started to reappear the therapy was repeated, since then there are no signs of the cancer returning. Kaitlyne McNamara was born with spina bifida a disease which had ravaged her kidneys, none of the traditional therapies worked, till they isolated some healthy stem cells from her own bladder, which in turn was used to grow her a brand new bladder, that was transplanted into her body with no fear of rejection because her own body was the source.

After relating these two stories about success that were medically exciting and ethical and did not involve the murder of embryonic stem cells it should have been front page news, but alas it has been totally ignore by the MSM and the researchers that were hoping for federal funding of their experiments with embryonic Stem cells. Why I ask would this break through be ignored? Because it would show that Bush is right of course and the Democrats are wrong.

The only "news" that came out of this meeting was about the veto of S5 and how wrong Bush is, not even a mention of the miracles from adult stem cells mentioned.

President Bush explained that the passing of S5 would have been "no small step, but a giant leap down a slippery slope" I agree with him on this issue.

There seems to be a faction that is determined to see that only embryonic stem cell research, federally funded is the only path to find cure, although as of today not a single break through has been found in embryonic stem cells.

I also agree that there is no need at all for embryonic stem cell research, but the other types of stem cell research may well prove quite beneficial. I'll never understand why some insist that embryonic is the "best" way to do this when it's patently not true.

But then when is the last time any politician actually knew what they were yapping about? They're all a bunch of disgusting examples of what our law schools have been churning out for years.

Because it is just another way for the Democrats to obstruct Bush, to try to divide an already divided nation, all in the name of regaining power at the White house.
As long as the democrats can keep Bush on the defense, nothing will get done, which is what the Democrats do best, NOTHING!

There are 500,000 pre-embryos frozen in this country and more being added to that number every year. Instead of destroying them, let them be used for research. The bill required that the stem cells come from embryos that would be discarded so the idea of women being paid to abort children for research is bogus. There may not have been substantive advances from this research YET. They have been working with a very limited number of already existing stem cell lines.

hESC (Human Embryonic Stem Cells)have turned motor neurons (nerves which carry messages between the brain and body)offering possibilities for repairing damage caused by ALS, spinal cord injury and other nerve disorders.

*I find this especially exciting because my son has damaged nerves in his shoulder and limited use of his right arm from a birth injury. At the time, they said there is no way to repair nerve damage but now there is hope.* I don't understand how people can't find this incredibly exciting.

hESC allow Alzheimers researchers to study the disease in human tissue cells instead of in people. This will lead to better Alzheimers medications.

Researchers grew heart cells in a petri dish and implanted them into the damaged hearts of pigs. 11 out of 13 hearts regained normal heart rates.

Scientists used hESC to grow retinal cells which could someday return vision to those suffering from retinal disease.

They developed proteins that could mark cancer stem cells from which they hope to develop medication that could slow or turn off tumor formation.

They have developed a stem cell line of Cystic Fibrosis that can now be studied.

They have used hESC to grow inner ear hair cells that do not naturally regrow. This could develop a treatment for deafness.

They made insulin producing cells from mouse ebryonic cells. When transplanted into diabetic mice, they reduced blood sugar flucuation and increased lifespan.

They used embryonic stem cells to grow liver, cartiledge, nerve tissue and blood vessels. All of which appeared to function normally when transplanted into mice.

The used hESC to reverse hemophilia in mice.

Mice were bred without a gene needed for immunity. Cloned cells partially restored the immune system which gives hope for AIDS treatment.

They transplanted hESC into the brains of rats that did not have dopamine producing nerve cells (dopamine regulates movement, loss of dopamine associated with Parkinsons). Implanted cells became dopamine producing cells and improved animals motion relative to controls.

Used hESC to retore myelin insulation around damaged nerves, returning motion to partially paralyzed rats.

Embryonic stem cells can become all cell types in the body. Adult stem cells are limited to differentiating into different cell types from their tissue of origin. They have also had problems retrieving adult stem cells from certain organs. Large numbers of Embryonic stem cells can be grown in culture. Adult stem cells are rare in mature tissue and methods for expanding their numbers in cell culture have not been worked out. Large numbers of cells are needed for cell replacement therapies.

Embryonic stem cells are derived from seven-day old blastocysts (microscopic balls of 150 or so cells). 60% of infertility patients said they would donate their frozen embryos for embryonic stem cell research.

Research on adult stem cells has recently generated a great deal of excitement. Scientists have found adult stem cells in many more tissues than they once thought possible. This finding has led scientists to ask whether adult stem cells could be used for transplants. In fact, adult blood forming stem cells from bone marrow have been used in transplants for 30 years. Certain kinds of adult stem cells seem to have the ability to differentiate into a number of different cell types, given the right conditions. If this differentiation of adult stem cells can be controlled in the laboratory, these cells may become the basis of therapies for many serious common diseases.

It was not until the 1990s that scientists agreed that the adult brain does contain stem cells that are able to generate the brain's three major cell types—astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, which are non-neuronal cells, and neurons, or nerve cells.

a single adult stem cell should be able to generate a line of genetically identical cells—known as a clone—which then gives rise to all the appropriate differentiated cell types of the tissue. Scientists tend to show either that a stem cell can give rise to a clone of cells in cell culture, or that a purified population of candidate stem cells can repopulate the tissue after transplant into an animal. Recently, by infecting adult stem cells with a virus that gives a unique identifier to each individual cell, scientists have been able to demonstrate that individual adult stem cell clones have the ability to repopulate injured tissues in a living animal.

Embryonic stem cells have not yet been used for even one therapy, while adult stem cells have already been successfully used in numerous patients, including for cardiac infarction (death of some of the heart tissue).

Evidently, tissue-specific stem cells have the ability–as has been impressively demonstrated in experiments with animals–to "transdifferentiate" themselves when in a different environment–that is, to take on the cell functions of the new tissue. Thus, neuronal stem cells of mice have transformed themselves into blood stem cells and produced blood cells. Indeed, there are indications of another capability of adult stem cells: Apparently they have the potential to be "reprogrammed." Not only can they adjust to the specific conditions of a new tissue environment, but they can even assume more generalized, earlier levels of development, so that it even appears possible that they become totipotent again.

So far there has been no solution to the problem of developing in the laboratory an unmistakable identifier for stem cells that can distinguish them unequivocally from cancer cells. For this reason, it is also not possible to produce sufficiently pure cell cultures from stem cells. So far, with embryonic mouse stem cells, a purity of only 80 percent has been achieved. That is in no way sufficient for cell transplantation as a human therapy. In a cell culture for therapeutic purposes, there must not be a single undifferentiated cell, since it can lead to unregulated growth, in this case to the formation of teratomas, a cancerous tumor derived from the germ layers. This problem would not be expected with adult stem cells, because of their greater differentiation.

Adult stem cells obviously have a universal program for division that is common to all the kinds of tissue stem cells, and makes them mutually interchangeable. This was discovered by Alexei Terskikh at Stanford University School of Medicine in California. He was able to prove that adult stem cells of blood-forming tissues, and of the brain, activate the same genes, in order to preserve their status as stem cells.

In May 2001, a further, spectacular experiment was reported, which was carried out on mice by scientists at Yale University. The researchers obtained stem cells from the bone marrow of male mice, and injected it into females whose own marrow had been destroyed by radioactive irradiation. Eleven months later, the male stem cells (identifiable through the male Y-chromosome) were found not only in the females’ bone marrow, but also in their blood, and in their gut, lung, and skin tissues.

What a nice long drawn out way to say NOT A DAMNED THING has been discovered through embryonic stem cell research while adult stem cell research has had breakthroughs, get it yet, embryonic stem cells nothing, none, zero, nada, nunka, not a thing.

And this is the whole point, as long as Bush does not want it, the Democrats will continue to try to kill to get it done, even though there is not a drop of evidence that it will be successful. They will continue to deny the breakthroughs in Adult stem Cells because it goes against their policies of agreeing with the President.

I'm with you here. I find it ridiculous to argue the point when these cells will eventually be destroyed when the donors are absolutely sure they do not wish to have anymore children.

The research and development of new treatments and medications takes time. It takes even longer when they are limited in the amount of stem cell lines they are allowed to use. A new treatment does not go from mouse to human immediately. There wasn't one development on there that you found exciting and hopeful?

Does the fact that these embryos are going to be destroyed anyway not hold any sway with you? Why not use them to do some good and offer some hope to the people suffering from these diseases?

And as far as villifying the Dem's on this issue there were many Republicans who voted for this bill. Maybe not enough to overide the veto but still it was not only supported by Dem's. Bill Frist, Rep., only m.d. in the Senate, voted for it. I would think that he would know if it held promise medically and he reflected taht in his vote. The fact is that adult stem cells are not the same. They cannot do all the things that HeSC can.

Until we have finished exploring adult stem cells, child stem cells and stem cells drawn from umbilical cords there is no reason to add embryonic stem cells to the list of FEDERALLY FUNDED research.

Not when there are successful treatments and therapies in place from adult and child stem cells already, how about we explore what has already produced some leaps forward instead of concentrating on pie in the sky hopes with no evidence as of yet that embryonic stem cells will do anything.

Hmm . . . actually, I think invoking Godwin's Law at such an early stage in the online debate nullifies any actual credence the statement may or may not have held.

I think it was a stroke of brilliance myself.
