America has problems, but America is NOT THE PROBLEM!~
Lets wait for the numbers

First A congratulations to Barack Obama my new President. I will withhold any judgements about him till I see what he does as President in his first term. Who knows this might be a great thing for the country, I have hopes anyways.

Now to adress the subject, in a few states like Virginia the black population voted for Obama as high as high as 90%, while blacks traditionally voted Democrat I don't think the numbers have ever been as high as this also the Latinos voted for Obama in huge numbers, Obama bled off enough White votes to slaughter McCain in his history making victory. But.... Does this show White folks how deep the resentment of minorities have?

I mean lets face it Obama has the least experience of any President-Elect in history, yet he blew away a much more experienced candidate, I do believe much of the voting was done not for the man, but for the color of his skin. Time will tell if this was a mistake or not.

Most people will note that "Obama is the first....". But most just wanted "change", without knowing what change is or will be. It happened before in 1976. I suspect this ride is going to be a lot worse.Be sure to fasten your seatbelt, Doc.

That is the essence, he never really DEFINED what "change and hope" looked like.

You know MM.  Something else that I am seeing here is that an Obama election may also show the selfishness of Americans.  When you think about all the rhetoric that Obama proclaimed.  Tax Cuts for the poor and middle class, Universal Healthcare, Trickle up economics (take money from the rich, give to the poor), etc.

Looking at the exit polls the lower classes are the one's that primarily voted for Obama.  Based upon Obama's policies can we say that in this case the lower class are the ones that are selfish and greedy?

Plus you never addressed my point about how come liberals have no problem thinking "SOME WHITES would not vote for Obama because he is Black" But Cannot accept that Blacks WOULD vote for him because he is black??

I thought I did when I said:

so many whites would not vote for Obama simply because he is Black?

I actually don't think that race was as important a deciding factor as most do. I can only point to anecdotal evidence, but, for example, some of my future in-laws are vocally racist and for months said they were voting for McCain -- but yesterday, they actually voted for Obama because they didn't want 4 more years of Republican lead policies (including both economic and foreign policy). It was the reserve Bradley effect. They were more concern with policy than skin color -- which is the way it should be, I think!

I don't think we are going to see eye to eye on this -- and that's okay.  I'm sure you (the collective you who doesn't support Obama) will have many reasons to complain over the next 4 years, just as I hope that I, as an Obama supporter, will have many reasons to be grateful for the choices I made that helped, even in a small way, Virginia go blue.

In the meantime -- I'm just glad you're back.

Very good opinion on the role of racism in the election here:

There are many good points on just how relevant race was in this election and how little the outcome will actually change racism.

Symbolism doesn't change racism one whit.

Just curious, Meg, did ya vote in NH too?

NH?  No, why?  I don't have any connection to NH -- but if you meant RI, then the answer is again, no.  I swtiched my voting registration to VA back in 2003 when there wasn't a hope in hell that my little blue vote would make a difference in a vast sea of red.

Much more than an eye opener, FOOD for THOUGHT a rare thing indeed.

minorities lack the gene causing racism, it is a proven fact! only white people can be racist.

Sadly a great many people did vote based solely upon race. Both ways. But then I guess it's no less stupid than those who vote on some single issue or other. Let's face it, the majority of voters don't vote based upon a thorough knowledge of the issues. I guess race is as good a stupid reason to vote as any.

Frankly I'd much rather hear someone say they voted for someone because of their race as to just bleat "change!" without the slightest idea of exactly what sort of change. At least they're honest (stupid, but honest).
