I learned this lesson at the age of 20 fairly fresh from Nam when I disrespected a friend of mines father, Rufus Speaks was his name {the father} well Johnny my friend just hung his head because he knew what was coming, Mr. Speaks who was around early 60's kicked my young strong ass and the whole time was talking to me in a very reasonable tone of voice" Angel {my street name forever} "I really do not like being talked to that way and I am sorry for doing this but you gotta learn respect for your elders" Needless to say 41 years later I remember the beating I took and the lesson I learned.

i don't begrudge them being in front of me. depending on how i feel i will usually allow an old lady in front of me.

what i begrudge is the one that comes up and tries to push me out of the way.

There's no way possible for you to take the title from Gene, so you'd have to be the second biggest idiot at worst.

Sounds like you did what needed to be done though, and hopefully taught a punk some lessons in manners.

I swear I gave up a long time ago on people showing respect to others, much less to their elders.  I know I get frustrated at times with 'geezers' wandering the aisles in front of me in stores.  I wish they'd have brains enough to move to one side of the aisle or the other, and wish that their hearing was good enough to here the footsteps behind them, or that their sense of touch was enough to feel the breath behind them as they stop dead in their tracks absolutely oblivious to the fact that someone is walking behind them with no way to get around because there is another such individual walking in the opposite direction <grrrrr!>

But, I've seen and been ticked off at just as many clueless school aged teens and youngers that don't have any manners whatsoever.  Walk around like the own the place, stand in front of the donuts breathing over all of them, fingering what seems to be half of them, pushing their nose up into many of them, and then continue to stand there while trying to find a second or third to go with the first one that they got.  Never occurs to them to check the case before opening the first door, or to move aside and perhaps let the person that knows what they want grab it and get on their way so they won't be late for work.

Still, I stand patiently (on the outside, impatiently on the inside) waiting for them to MOVE (THE F---) out of my way please.

Manners went out with the dark ages, apparently for all age groups, but most definitely for the under 40 age group in most places.

This kind of reminds me of me when I was on the train in Boston many years ago. A big black guy and his friends got on. I was standing holding onto a pole because it was so crowded. This guy grabbed my pole and towered over me. I was about 110 pounds and looked every bit a small town country gal. I had my pocketbook zipped, around my neck and hanging at my waist.

As we were going, he started humming in my ear. He was only inches from my face, distracting me. It felt very uncomfortable. When the train stopped he went to exit while I stayed on. I looked down to see my pocketbook unzipped, saw him sliding my wallet under his coat as he was going down the steps. I reached over, grabbed my wallet from his big black hands and shouted very loudly for all to hear...."that's my wallet, thank you very much." He ran off into the darkness.

My mother in law almost fell off her seat. She couldn't believe I did that. She said I was a hot ticket. A name I'm very proud of.

But I had my kids baby pictures in that wallet. And nobody was messin' with them.

So, way to go MM. Welcome to the "hot-ticket club."

Be careful, you might call someones attention over the use of the word black. he may think you are being racist like he thought LW was.

Biggest Idiot?  no way!  You used a great amount of restraint, and just the right amount of force to defuse a dangerous situation and teach a young miscreant a valuable lesson that may save his life in the future.

If you had not intervened, the damage to this young pups life, and perhaps those around him may have been far more serious.  Well done!

well I felt like the biggest Idiot, but as usual you are right gene is by far the biggest idiot on a daily basis.

It is not my job to go around teaching people manners through violence terp.

This has gotten so weird, congrats about this, is not what I wanted at all. My behavior was terrible and childish.

I understand what you're saying here. I guess it's how you look at it.

One way would be to humble yourself and let him go, let him push you around. Just maybe he'll feel bad later on about what he did and think about it some.

On the other hand, you held him accountable. You told him it wasn't ok to push older people around. You taught him he needs to respect people and pushing them around was not showing respect. He now will think (if he has any brains) long and hard before he does this again. In the meantime, he's gotta answer for what he did. He said he was in a hurry right? Well he got detained alot longer than if he just let you go first.

hahhahaha, just think...the first will be last and the last will be first.

Hopefully you just saved another older person from being pushed around by this punk. Hopefully he learned a valuable lesson that day.

On the other hand, he took the first swing. He was in the wrong and the agressor. you neutralized him. you did not "pound him into dust". That is the difference between being "an idiot", and stopping a miscreant from doing further harm. And perhaps making him see the error of his ways for future encounters with people.

Or for short "On the other hand, you held him".

I would congratulate my kids for standing up to a bully, so I congratulate you for the same, as you are getting older and becoming more like a child daily.   

now what col gene would have done is let the punk go and attack the old lady standing behind him
