America has problems, but America is NOT THE PROBLEM!~

One of the greatest things that led humans to being the top of the food chain and the single most inventive creature on the planet besides the brain is the thumb.

Most of us know this yet give little or NO thought to this miracle.

Long ago  while learning Aikido My master Insisted we learn the lesson of the importance of the thumb since it plays an integral part of the art of Aikido.

Here is my challenge and learning experience to all of you.

Take your thumbs, both of them and tape them to the palm of your hand so it may not be used at all, do this for 8 hours { I had to do it for 24 hours} then come back here and write about your lesson and experiences on living with no use of your thumbs, and your new found appreciation of them and their importance in daily life.

I don't know if I could do that for 8 hours. Maybe I'll try it for an hour or 15 minutes. I'll let you know how long I last. Not today though I have to wrap presents and that just would not work unless I bought gift bags but I don't ever want to go to the store again. That's my steady refrain but still I go. You're right though I totally take my thumbs for granted. Even thinking about it, I'm thinking of all the things I won't be able to do or at least not be able to do well.

MM:

I'll take the challenge,  just not before I'm finished packing and moving.

These arthritic hands of mine have a hard enough time!  can't imagine going without thumbs....had to go without the use of one finger two different times when I broke it twice!  Hard as heck to not be able to use just little old finger!

As someone who has stubbed their thumb so badly that it had to be splinted for days, I know exactly what you mean.

...as an aside, just think of how dangerous we'd be with prehensile tails and feet!

Heh,you ain't tellin' me nothin' I didn't already know, Elie. I've been walkin' around with my thumb up my ass for years.

DID YOU SAY THUMBS????

I've had mine taped/splinted a couple of times. I know exactly how useless a hand can be without that wonderful thumb.

! Oh Joe you crazy person you!!

I wouldn't last a second. I did it for a couple and no way! Plus I couldn't type! This is a great exercise, I didn't realise how much we depended on our thumbs! Hmm, a nice exercise for my kids when they're being naughty!
[Edited to give Elie a big smooch. I didn't forget you babe!]
