Senator Bill Nelson, is doing nothing but grandstanding, He has no power to do anything yet here he is meeting with the Syrian President and leader of the Baath party and avowed enemy of the United States,

Bashar Al-Assad.

He does not represent the United States in any way except to be a Senator. He was not given permission by the President to do this, nor has President Bush asked him to do so.

This is just another way for the Democrats to try and make the President look bad. This sends a terrible message to our enemies.

Bill Nelson should be striped of his office and tried for Treasonous actions.

This is despicable behavior, even for a Democrat!

The article says that specter is going too. This isn't about being traitors, this is about reinventing the American government without permission. This is about stripping the executive branch of it's constitutional power.

We are in for hard times unless the corrupt congress of the US is reigned in. They are out of control and answer to no one but the parties that pay their bills. It doesn't matter which party is in the majority, nothing changes, and now they want to hijack the constitutional diplomatic role of the executive branch.

If this were just treason, it wouldn't bother me a bit. Our government has the tools to deal with people who commit treason swiftly and with finality. What we can't deal with is the government itself losing touch with its own definition and becoming the chaotic mess it has become. This is far, far worse than simple treason.

No, it is what it has become since the 70s. Yes it is far worse. No, it is not a new thing. Unfortunately.

Nope, I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Provide examples if you like. We've had ineffectual Presidents, and we've had wrong minded presidents, but what you have now amounts to a bone fide movement to completely marginalize the presidency.

There's been conflicts historically, and there have been turf wars in our darkest times between the different branches of government. This, though is the beginning of a new era. Wait and see.

So Arlen Specter (R-PA) would be a traitor too it seems.
on Dec 13, 2006
That's because it isn't about any particular party. It's about trying to shift diplomatic power to the branch where the most corrupt, represented by both parties, can get their slimy hands on it. This may very well be the last strong presidency we ever see if we end up with the kind of election we are asking for in 2008.

It's a sick, sad mess, and people don't care because they are brainwashed by "bush is evil" silliness. Those who aren't are brainwashed into believing one or the other party will behave differently. They won't. They've learned with Bush that they can't afford to allow the President the kind of power the constitution grants the office.

as of today Arlen Specter HAS NOT joined Nelson, till he does or if he does then yes he will be a traitor too. Till then Nelson stands alone.

who comes to mind is Hanoijohn Kerry meeting with the Vietcong, of course Kery at the time was not in political office.

Yes this seems like the Democrats are trying for a bloodless coup.

Not Dems, MM, Political parties. They don't have the collective control they need over the presidency. Once the president is there, they can't influence him. In Congress they can keep our representatives on a little string, making sure nothing they want to do gets done, and that they won't be re-elected. Presidents have too much independence, and if parties want to reach out further into international politics they have to subvert the office.

So lets not divert this in partisan terms. Specter is as big a tool as Nelson, and if he doesn't go it will be because of the press this gets. In the end the effort won't change, even if it isn't as overt.

Agreed! the entire congress is guilty, the right as well as the left. It just happens that Bill Nelson is todays most guilty.
