torture[1,noun]torture[2,transitive verb]

Main Entry: 1tor·ture
Pronunciation: 'tor-ch&r
Function: noun
Etymology: French, from Late Latin tortura, from Latin tortus, past participle of torquEre to twist; probably akin to Old High German drAhsil turner, Greek atraktos spindle
1 a : anguish of body or mind : AGONY b : something that causes agony or pain
2 : the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure
3 : distortion or overrefinement of a meaning or an argument : STRAINING

now please do not make me define anguish and agony cause I will........

again I say for the dense..

Making a room 95 degrees is not TORTURE.... its damn uncomfortable.

Playing loud music (90 decibels} is not Torture is just mind numbing

Making a room cold 40 degrees is not TORTURE... it is very uncomfortable.

Making someone stand in place is NOT TORTURE.

Putting a blindfold on someones head is not torture... its scarey period.

I am tired of the left twisting my words so the outcome is as they choose../

for the fainthearted I will now list some torture beware your bleeding heart might rupture.

Slamming slivers of bamboo on fire under your toenails is torture

Pulling your tongue out and cutting it off is torture.... saddam did this on a constant basis.

Cutting someone hands off in stages from the fingers upwards is torture... saddam also did this.

Gassing someone with chemical agents is torture saddam did this also

Cutting off someones ears is torture saddam also did this.

Can any of you bleeders name one instance in THIS WAR where we did anything approaching what I said is torture??

This is why I changed parties.... this is why bleeders make me nuts... they want to compare the horror of abu graves to torture.. its not torture is misguided and criminal for sure... but it does not reach what torture is..

If you look at entry 3 you {the bleeders} will see what YOU DO IS TORTUREOUS ...

We are the United States of America and we hold our nation to a higher standard. I don't know what's so hard to understand there.

AGHAIN i SAY what I approve of and NONE NONE NONE OF IT qualifies as torture

But they (the government) is pretty much going to do it the way *they* want.

I think the problem here is that there is an assumption that everyone subjected to the torture-lite (which is apparently the new word for this brand of discomfort) is guilty, and therefore deserves it. And yet if you look at the figures of people released from camps known to use these techniques, the number of people kept for further investigation is really quite low. For example at Abu Ghraib (the only jail with much in the way of details about prisoner release published; I make no judgements that other camps go beyond torture-lite) the vast majority of those incarcerated were released without charge.

If you were found at the scene of a murder or bank robbery, would you consider it just for the policeman to chain you to the floor of the police station and force you to lie in the foetal position for two days in order to gain information from you? Would it be just to expose you to extremes of hot or cold or use techniques designed to remove a prisoner's knowledge of time and space?

If you answer yes, then perhaps you have a reason to support torture-lite. But otherwise you're simply inflicting on innocent people the very same punishment you would refuse to have inflicted on you. Can anyone spell hypocrisy?

I only use the term because the US government has used it and it has entered the public domain as a description for this kind of treatment. It's just a shortform for the 5-line description you had - time is short, and I'd rather not spend it writing out long tracts.

If the majority of those subjected to this treatment were in fact found in that way, then there is a bigger issue of US corruption at stake. What kind of country releases mass murderers back into the community in their thousands? Surely that isn't justice either. The bribes must be enormous and at all levels of the military administration in Iraq for such blatant breaches of justice to be tolerated.

Personally I think it's more likely the majority of those imprisoned and mistreated are simply innocent, but you can have a grand conspiracy theory if you prefer.

Yes, making people stand naked, while being taunted, laughed at etc, and having electrical equipment to electrocute prisoners with, as we did, is A) Sexual Harassment and Torture, because it is anguish of the mind, and the electrocution of the body.

Moderateman.. I have realized two things from reading your posts... a) you are not moderate and you don't spell/write/talk very properly

Cacto- my respect for you just at least doubled based on that excellent post regarding torture-lite
