torture[1,noun]torture[2,transitive verb]

Main Entry: 1tor·ture
Pronunciation: 'tor-ch&r
Function: noun
Etymology: French, from Late Latin tortura, from Latin tortus, past participle of torquEre to twist; probably akin to Old High German drAhsil turner, Greek atraktos spindle
1 a : anguish of body or mind : AGONY b : something that causes agony or pain
2 : the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure
3 : distortion or over refinement of a meaning or an argument : STRAINING

now please do not make me define anguish and agony cause I will........

again I say for the dense..

Making a room 95 degrees is not TORTURE.... its damn uncomfortable.

Playing loud music (90 decibels} is not Torture is just mind numbing

Making a room cold 40 degrees is not TORTURE... it is very uncomfortable.

Making someone stand in place is NOT TORTURE.

Putting a blindfold on someones head is not torture... its scary period.

I am tired of the left twisting my words so the outcome is as they choose../

for the fainthearted I will now list some torture beware your bleeding heart might rupture.

Slamming slivers of bamboo on fire under your toenails is torture

Pulling your tongue out and cutting it off is torture.... Saddam did this on a constant basis. So do the Terrorists we are fighting and worse.

Cutting someone hands off in stages from the fingers upwards is torture... Saddam also did this. We have proof that the Muslim lunatics do this also.

Gassing someone with chemical agents is torture Saddam did this also

Cutting off someones ears is torture Saddam also did this. We have proof the Muslim Terrorists do this too.

Can any of you  name one instance in THIS WAR where we did anything approaching the true definition of torture?

Do any of you have proof that America has done anything besides a bunch of unsubstantiated rumors that we have engaged in any of this kind of horrendous behavior?

hardly makes it American policy.

issuing special presidential findings and directives approving extraordinary rendition and setting up detention centers offshore does exactly that--makes it american policy.

So you think we are torturing people kingbee?

Amnesty International - no friend of America - is saying that.

If there were the slightest doubt Amnesty International would jump at the chance of blackening Americas eye, they have done it before on little or no evidence before and will do it again!

I think that there is a easy solution to finding out what torture is, PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU THINk I AM WRONG.

When foriegn countries start water boarding US Soldiers, ask the US Soldier if it was torture.

When foriegn countries start leaving US Soldiers in a 40 degree room for long periods , ask the US Soldier if it was torture.

When foriegn countries start leaving US Soldiers in a 90 degree, high humidity, room with a bag over their head, ask the US Soldier if it was torture.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DONT BELIEVE THE ABOVE WILl EVER HAPPEN?

I am looking for someone, anyone from the left to tell me what they consider anything we as a nation has done that could be considered torture.

Hi ModMan,

You can delete this if you wish as it's probably not what your looking for.

I'm not from the left, but for the record....we have medical torture, 4,000 going on everyday in this country in the form of abortion. Some babies have even made it through the tearing apart of limbs and the saline scalding, etc. and then when born alive have been put in a cold metal dish or back closet to die. We now have official court testimony to confirm this.

That's an interesting thought. But consider this, when American soldiers kill insurgent or innocent bystanders they are murderers. When the insurgents kill American soldiers or American civilians they are called freedom fighters. We fight by the rules and are to be monsters, they fight by no rules and are considered the victims.

I guess you are only bad if you make rules then break them as oppose to not having any rules at all.

Your right, it is very wrong for us to be called muders, maybe invaders would be a better term.

During the revolutionary war, did we fight by the rules? Did the British consider us freedom fighters?

As far as following rules, they are following the rules, not our rules, but neither are we (torture). Their rules have been around alot longer then ours, of course they are religios rules, which we hae a hard time grasping.

Besides the Geneva Convention rules, we usually follow the Standard Christian Response Rulew (hay that kind of sounds religious)

Which is Bomb, Invade, Kill, Kill, Kill. (Invade part was added fairly recently).

I personally define torture as the psychological or physical means to cause discomfort or pain to a prisoner. This includes freeze/heat discomfort; denial of normal rights such as food/sanitation facilities;use of water, excessive noise, electricit shock or beating to cause discomfort.

Now to the nitty gritty: It is untrue to say that America has not tortured. There is more than book that details CIA torture. I'll name them if you like but let's say this: One written account causes smoke and more than that is accusation with proof. There is ample proof that Directors Helms and Colby ordered excessive means to torture Soviet and Vietcong captives.Apart from stupid individuals who took the law into their own hands there are many instances of torture sanctioned from the highest levels.

I don't think you'll have to worry about that. MM's health has improved drastically and he is out living his life. He mentioned that he periodically checks these but I wouldn't hold my breathe waiting for him to reply.

Thanks AD,
While I knew MM had slowed down, I didn't know that he was no longer actively participating here on JU. I wish the very best and pray for good health and happiness for MM and his family.

Hope MM's getting stronger and he's OK!

Yes he is. He was telling me about his excursions out at the beach. It is because his health has improved he is now out enjoying life. Although I'm sure he is missed by some JUs but I am glad to know he is out living life. I'm sure that will help him to improve health as well.
